Have you been with Jesus?

What we need is not a degree, a title, money, power, or fame. We need him. “His divine power,” Peter wrote, “has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness” (2 Peter 1:3 NIV).
Everything we need. Don’t you feel like you can just breathe a big sigh of relief?
But let's look again at Acts 4:13...
Luke didn’t just say that Peter and John had SEEN Jesus or been AWARE of him—it says they had been WITH him. The term used here denotes a close and intimate fellowship, not just someone they chatted with on their way to work one morning. Peter didn’t speak with the authority of someone who had a single encounter with Jesus, but of someone who deeply knew and loved him. In other words, spending time with Jesus changes us.
Are you spending time with Jesus? Not just glancing at a couple of verses and checking off a list. Not just muttering a prayer when you’re stuck in traffic. Are you truly spending time getting to know him—his character, his heart, his will? Are you inviting him into every space in your life, from dedicated time reading his Word and praying, to your work, to your relationships, to your very thoughts and feelings? In his book With: Reimagining the Way You Relate to God, Skye Jethani writes, “What brings a person value, significance, and hope is not what he does but with whom he does it.”
This is what I mean when I encourage you to live your “everyday, ordinary life” for God as an offering. We don’t have to have a degree or years of training. God loves and calls us, no matter how “common” or “uneducated” we are. But we do need to take time to know the God who made us, loves us, and saves us.
My prayer for each of us is that we astonish people because they look at us and think, “They have been with Jesus.”
